Dr. Owens is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. Dr. Owens is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and Medical Board of California. He specializes in bariatric and general/abdominal surgery for people suffering from morbid obesity. Dr. Owens is currently Medical Director of Bariatrics at Chapman Global Medical Center, and Coastal Center for Obesity and is Chief of Surgery Chapman Global Medical Center. He is a current or past member of various professional societies. Dr. Owens has an extensive list of Academic Appointments ranging from 1974 to present. He has served on Editorial Boards and has more than 45 Journal Publications, published books, numerous Book Chapters and has appeared on TV and Radio. Dr. Samakar is a board certified General Surgeon, a fellow of the American College of Surgeons as well as the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. He completed a Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery Fellowship at Harvard Medical School where he was also a clinical instructor of surgery. He is currently a faculty member of the University of Southern California (USC) Keck School of Medicine where he serves as a full-time surgeon & Associate Professor, researcher, and educator. Dr. Samakar is the Director of the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery program at USC Keck Medical Center. He holds a Master's degree in Bioethics and Health Law from the University of Pittsburgh and has been active in the study and practice of medical-legal issues for nearly 20 years. Steven Fowler, MD is Board Certified in General Surgery. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS). He is also a Fellow of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (FASMBS). He is the Medical Director and founder of the Hawaii Center for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery at Adventist Health Castle. The program participates in the MBSAQIP reporting and has been certified since 2009. His busy practice focuses on Gastric Bypass, Sleeve Gastrectomy, Duodenal Switch, and revisional bariatric operations. In addition, he performs foregut and abdominal wall surgery. Michael Barker, MD, FACS, is a fellowship-trained, board-certified general surgeon who specializes in Bariatric and Laparoscopic Surgery. He is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy and SUNY Brooklyn College of Medicine, and also completed a Fellowship in Bariatric & Minimally Invasive Surgery at East Carolina University. Dr. Barker spent 16 years on Active Duty in the Navy, where he made multiple overseas deployments and was Director of the largest Bariatric Surgery program within the Department of Defense. He continues to serve in executive and leadership positions in the Navy Reserve, including as Advisor to the Surgeon General of the Navy regarding General Surgery.
