Dr. Joseph Valdez is a board-certified physician in both Family Medicine and Addiction Medicine with over a decade of clinical, academic, and leadership experience. He currently serves as Program Director of the ACGME-accredited Addiction Medicine Fellowship at Geisinger Health System and is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine. Dr. Valdez has extensive experience in outpatient addiction treatment, medication-assisted therapy, and the integration of addiction services into primary care. He has led clinical teams at ASAM levels 3.7 (medically managed inpatient), 2.5 (partial hospitalization program) and 1.7 (medically managed outpatient). His expertise spans the evaluation and treatment of substance use disorders, opioid & alcohol pharmacology, withdrawal management, and the neurobiology of addiction. He has served in leadership roles across multiple institutions, developed curricula, and contributed to national conversations on addiction through media appearances, scholarly presentations, and quality improvement research. He has extensive experience in medical education and is adept at communicating complex topics in an easy-to-understand manner. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine and actively participates in national committees in academic addiction medicine.
