Neal A Sher MD, FACS is a nationally known ophthalmic surgeon, educator, author, consultant and expert witness with more than 40 years of experience in ophthalmology. His clinical and surgical practice focused on corneal disease, refractive surgery, cataract surgery, anterior segment disorders, glaucoma, and complex ophthalmic diagnosis and treatment. He was involved in laser vision correction from its earliest development and was among the first surgeons in the world to perform excimer laser therapeutic procedures and laser vision correction. He has extensive experience with PRK, LASIK, LASEK, refractive surgery complications, corneal surgery, and cataract surgery. In addition to malpractice and injury work, Dr. Sher has served as an expert in major intellectual property, patent, and Hatch-Waxman litigation for some of the nation’s leading law firms involving ophthalmic pharmaceuticals, devices, and surgical technology in the United States and abroad. He holds several patents relating to ophthalmic devices and medications and has consulted for leading ophthalmic pharmaceutical and medical device companies. He also consults in MDL and class action litigation. Dr. Sher has been a consultant to the U.S. Department of Justice on Medicare fraud issues and to the Minnesota Supreme Court. He has also consulted, conducted clinical trials, and performed research for leading ophthalmic device and pharmaceutical companies. Dr. Sher is highly qualified in standard of care determinations involving LASIK, PRK, LASEK, refractive surgery complications, corneal disease, corneal transplantation, cataract surgery, anterior segment disorders, glaucoma, neuro-ophthalmology, ocular infections, and ophthalmic medications. He has reviewed more than 350 potential malpractice matters for plaintiff, defense, and malpractice insurers. His work includes medical record review, case analysis, affidavits, declarations, expert reports, depositions, and trial testimony. His expert witness and consulting work includes medical malpractice, personal injury, workers’ compensation, product liability, intellectual property, MDL, class action, and pharmaceutical patent litigation. He renders opinions on standard of care, causation, damages, prognosis, visual impairment, and disability. Dr. Sher has substantial expertise in ocular trauma and complex eye injuries, including injuries from motor vehicle accidents, workplace accidents, defective products, chemical exposures, burns, and non-lethal force injuries such as pepper spray and chemical spray. He also evaluates vision and perception issues in motor vehicle and aviation accidents. He is highly experienced in ocular infections, including corneal infections, fungal keratitis, contact lens-related infections, and corneal infections associated with contaminated eye drops, artificial tears, ophthalmic medications, and defective or contaminated products. He has also consulted in cases involving ocular drug toxicity and toxic or chemical eye exposure, including ammonia, chlorine, and other noxious substances. He is the author of two textbooks, several monographs, and dozens of peer-reviewed articles, particularly in refractive surgery and related ophthalmic subjects. He is an Adjunct Professor of Ophthalmology at the U of Minnesota Medical School and an Adjunct Lecturer in the Department of Ophthalmology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. Dr. Sher has received the Achievement Award and Senior Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Troutman Medal from the International Society of Refractive Surgery for his work on pain control after PRK and LASIK.
