Tom Holland is an exercise physiologist, fitness-industry consultant, university professor, author, and experienced expert witness with more than 30 years of experience in personal training, strength and conditioning, group fitness, health-club operations, exercise programming, and fitness-equipment use. He has been retained as a testifying and consulting expert in 8 matters to date, including 4 depositions, in an approximately even split of plaintiff and defense engagements, in matters involving personal-trainer negligence, exercise supervision, inappropriate exercise selection, group-fitness injuries, indoor cycling, strength-training practices, trainer qualifications, fitness-facility procedures, and standards of care within the fitness industry. His experience includes on-site inspections, including a triathlon bike-course accident location and a gym-facility incident location. Holland earned a master's degree in Exercise Science and Sports Psychology and a Graduate Certificate in Human Behavior from Harvard Extension School. His professional credentials include Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (NSCA-CSCS), Certified Sports Nutritionist (CISSN), and certifications from ACSM, ACE, NASM, and AFAA. As an adjunct university professor, Holland teaches Applied Biomechanics, Applied Kinesiology, Strength and Conditioning, and Fitness Assessment. His teaching and professional work encompass human movement, exercise technique, program design, client screening, progression, supervision, injury-risk reduction, and the safe and appropriate use of fitness equipment. Holland previously served for ten years as Chief Fitness Advisor for Nautilus, Inc., working with the Bowflex, Schwinn, Nautilus, and Octane Fitness brands. His experience also includes owning and operating a 10,000-square-foot fitness facility, managing corporate fitness facilities, training clients, teaching group exercise, coaching endurance athletes, and developing fitness programs and educational content. He is the author of six books on exercise and health and has appeared as a fitness expert on TODAY, Good Morning America, CNN, and numerous other national media outlets. He has completed 28 Ironman triathlons and more than 80 marathons and ultramarathons. His combination of academic training, practical fitness-industry experience, university teaching, and extensive media work enables him to explain complex exercise and biomechanics concepts clearly to attorneys, judges, and juries.
