Eduardo Arenas is a Federally Certified Spanish Court Interpreter (Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts, Certification No. 10-006) and a Florida State Certified Court Interpreter (Certification No. 10-00132 SPA) with nearly 25 years of experience interpreting and translating in state and federal legal proceedings. Mr. Arenas specializes in forensic transcription and translation (FTT), linguistic analysis, interpreter performance evaluations, and the review of Spanish-language evidence used in criminal, civil, and administrative litigation. He has completed approximately 50 forensic transcription and translation assignments involving recorded jail calls, law enforcement interviews, wiretapped communications, body-worn camera recordings, controlled calls, and other evidentiary audio and video recordings. His work has been admitted into evidence in numerous state and federal proceedings, frequently by stipulation. As an expert witness, Mr. Arenas has testified in jury trials, evidentiary hearings, and other court proceedings regarding the accuracy and reliability of Spanish-language evidence. His opinions have addressed issues including translation accuracy, disputed interpretations, linguistic ambiguity, interpreter performance, and the meaning of Spanish-language statements with constitutional significance. In one federal criminal matter, the United States District Court credited Mr. Arenas' expert opinion regarding a defendant's invocation of the right to counsel, granting a motion to suppress after rejecting the government's interpretation of the recorded Spanish statement. Mr. Arenas has extensive experience evaluating the work of other interpreters and translators, identifying translation errors, omissions, additions, register shifts, false cognates, and other linguistic issues that may affect the accuracy, reliability, or admissibility of evidence. He is also experienced in preparing bilingual forensic transcripts that comply with evidentiary standards and accurately reflect regional dialects, colloquialisms, slang, and culturally specific language. In addition to his expert witness practice, Mr. Arenas has interpreted thousands of proceedings in state and federal courts, including trials, evidentiary hearings, depositions, grand jury proceedings, and attorney-client meetings. He has provided interpreting services throughout Florida and in federal courts in Arizona, Texas, Georgia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Mr. Arenas earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Florida and has been federally certified since 2010 and Florida certified since 2004. He is available for retention by plaintiffs, defendants, prosecutors, defense counsel, governmental agencies, corporations, and private parties in matters involving Spanish-language evidence, forensic transcription and translation, interpreter performance evaluations, and linguistic analysis.
