I am triple board certified in general/trauma surgery, surgical critical care, and neurocritical care. I finished my fellowship in surgical critical care in 2019 and have been working at San Joaquin General Hospital in French Camp, CA ever since. 90% of my practice is in trauma, surgical critical care, and neurocritical care. I regularly testify as a witness in assault and murder trials. I am a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Fellow of the International College of Surgeons. My BA was done at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD; my MD training was done at the University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio; and my master of public health degree was done at the Harvard School of Public Health. I completed general surgery residency at Boston University Medical Center, including a two-year research fellowship at Boston Children's Hospital, and my surgical critical care fellowship at Cooper University Healthcare in Camden, NJ. In addition to the American College of Surgeons and the International College of Surgeons, I am a member of the Chest Wall Injury Society (where I served as secretary/treasurer), the California Medical Association, the San Joaquin Medical Society, the Society of Critical Care Medicine, the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma (EAST), the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma (AAST), and the Pacific Coast Surgical Association. I was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society as both a resident and a fellow. I have been honored with multiple surgical humanitarian awards, including the Rebuilding Alliance 2025 Humanitarian Award, the Chest Wall Injury Society 2025 Humanitarianism Award, and the 2025 Joe A. Callaway Award for Civic Courage. In addition to my full-time clinical work I serve on multiple hospital committees, including the Trauma Performance Improvement and Patient Safety Committee, the Hospital Emergency Management Committee, and the Health Information Management Committee. I am a reviewer for several medical journals, including the Journal of the American College of Surgeons; the British Medical Journal; Medicine, Conflict, and Survival; and Health and Human Rights. I am certified in BLS, ACLS, ATLS, FES, and FLS. I previously served as the general surgery residency program director at San Joaquin General Hospital. I am a regular invited lecturer at the UCLA Introduction to Global Health course and a surgical instructor for the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative's ECHO course. I am a certified course director for the American College of Surgeons Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), and an instructor for the Advanced Surgical Skills for Exposure in Trauma (ASSET) and Stop the Bleed (StB) courses. I have taught ATLS and StB in the United States and in Ukraine in 2023 and 2024. I have no financial disclosures beyond normal investments in stock market index funds. I have published on topics ranging from global surgery to surgical stabilization of rib fractures in multiple peer-reviewed medical journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine and the Journal of the American College of Surgeons. I regularly appear in American and international television, radio, and print media to discuss these topics. My international surgical work is featured in the documentary film “American Doctor”. I have been cited as an expert on trauma surgery throughout the American media and in such diverse forums as United Nations reports and the New York Review of Books, and I have briefed the United Nations Secretary General and the Security Council on these matters. I was born in Houston, TX, grew up in Flint, MI, and now reside in Lathrop, CA.
