Rick Hamilton is a technical expert in artificial intelligence and machine learning systems, enterprise software and cloud architecture, healthcare technology, and patent matters, with more than 30 years of experience and a rare cross-disciplinary depth spanning production AI, healthcare IT, and intellectual property. He is a named inventor on 1,064 issued U.S. patents and was recognized as the 18th most prolific inventor in the world (USPTO / Patent & Trademark Office Society, January 2020), with an H-index of 99 and 38,000+ citations. His patent portfolio spans AI/ML, cloud computing, IoT, healthcare IT, natural language processing, and enterprise software. His career includes nearly 25 years at IBM, spanning software development, enterprise architecture, AI/IoT strategy, and intellectual property, followed by executive technology leadership as Vice President and Senior Distinguished Engineer at UnitedHealth Group and Chief Technology Officer of the Focused Ultrasound Foundation. This combination of hands-on technical depth and enterprise leadership allows him to assess complex technical questions and communicate them clearly to non-technical audiences, including judges and juries. Mr. Hamilton provides expert services in patent validity and invalidity analysis, claim construction, infringement and non-infringement analysis, and prior-art evaluation, and has prepared technical declarations under 37 CFR § 1.132, including analysis relevant to patent-eligibility (Section 101) issues. His technical subject-matter expertise spans AI/ML systems architecture and model lifecycle, generative and agentic AI, large language models, AI and data governance, enterprise and cloud architecture, and healthcare information technology, including EHR/EMR systems, clinical workflows, interoperability, and medical-device technology, drawn from work with major health systems and medical-device organizations. He is currently retained as an independent technical expert in U.S. patent prosecution involving AI-driven healthcare technology systems, preparing multiple expert declarations across related applications. His prior expert work has consisted of technical declarations and consulting analysis; he is available and prepared for deposition and trial engagements, as well as written reports, technical tutorials for legal teams, and consulting opinions. An experienced public speaker, Mr. Hamilton has delivered keynotes at the USPTO and to audiences in more than 30 countries, and can translate sophisticated technical concepts into clear, persuasive testimony.
