Dr. Mark J. Vanarelli is a multi-disciplinary engineer and academic with broad expertise in natural resources and mining engineering. He has worked in industry, academia, and government for over thirty (35+) years. Previously, he was the Department Head of Civil Engineering and an Associate Professor in Mining Engineering at the University of Kurdistan (UKH) in Hewler (Erbil), Iraq. Dr. Vanarelli received his Bachelor of Science in geological sciences from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He also holds a BS/ME Degree in Geological Engineering, a Master of Engineering (Engineer of Mines) degree and a Ph.D. degree in Mining and Earth Systems Engineering, all from the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado. Dr. Vanarelli is a licensed Professional Engineer in civil, mining, and geological engineering in Nevada and New Mexico. He also holds PE licenses in civil engineering in Colorado, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. He is a licensed Professional Geologist in several states. Dr. Vanarelli is recognized as a Model Law Engineer through the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES). He is also recognized as an International Professional Engineer (IntPE) through NCEES. Dr. Vanarelli is a Chartered Engineer through the Engineering Council in the United Kingdom, Europe. Dr. Vanarelli is a Board-Certified Environmental Engineer through the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists (AAEES). He has serves as an ABET Engineering Expert for the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) in the fields of mining, civil, geological, environmental and water resources engineering since 2005. As an ABET expert, he has conducted 19 accreditation visits, both nationally and internationally, and evaluated programs in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Indonesia. Dr. Vanarelli has been nominated and elected Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). Dr. Vanarelli is published both nationally and internationally. Currently, he owns an independent consulting company, COVAN Engineering LLC, and practices in the fields of civil, mining, geological, environmental, and water resources engineering. Dr. Vanarelli also works for the U.S. Department of Energy as a Senior Subject Matter Expert in Geomechanics at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in Carlsbad, New Mexico. He has traveled around the world to six continents. He has worked on four continents.
