Dr Richard J. Brue DO, MS, FACP, FACOI is a dually board-certified physician in Internal Medicine with a focused practice in Hospital Medicine and Addiction Medicine, with over sixteen years of experience delivering comprehensive inpatient care in community, regional, and tertiary hospital settings. A tenured Clinical Professor at the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine, he is recognized for his excellence in medical education, having earned multiple academic awards and authored peer-reviewed publications in leading journals. Dr. Brue has served in numerous hospital leadership roles where he has advanced clinical quality including chairing the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Pharmacy, and Nutrition Committees; contributing to hospital executive governance as a medical executive committee member; and co-founding an advisory group for a large hospitalist practice. He has spent years as the vice-chair of The Care Monitoring Committee reviewing medical cases enterprise wide for an international hospital system. He was also selected from a pool of thousands of physicians to participate in both the Sanford and Avera Health Physician Academies which further informs his ability to assess systems of care, quality measures, and standards of practice. In his expert witness work, Dr. Brue applies his broad clinical expertise and administrative insight to evaluate cases involving alleged breaches of the standard of care, causation, and complex hospital-based decision making. He has experience working in a wide range of hospital settings from small critical access hospitals to large academic medical centers and as such brings a unique perspective to each case he reviews considering the nuances involved in hospitals of different sizes and available resources. Additionally, his background in Addiction Medicine adds a specialized perspective in cases involving substance use disorders and related medical complications.
