Dr. Robert Cole is a board-certified Critical Care Medicine and Internal Medicine physician with extensive clinical, academic, and leadership experience. He served as Chair of the Division of Critical Care Medicine at Inspira Medical Center and is currently Director of Critical Care for Community Clinical Sites at Cooper University Hospital of Rowan University and the medical director for NJ Palliative Care and Siren Medical Spa. In addition, he previously served as Medical Director of Inspira’s Specialized Care Transport Unit. Dr. Cole completed his Internal Medicine residency and Critical Care fellowship at Cooper University Hospital, where he also served as Chief Resident and Chief Fellow. He earned his M.D. from Ross University School of Medicine, with additional training at the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara, and holds a B.S. in Biology from Clemson University. He is dual board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine (Internal Medicine and Critical Care) and certified in Neurocritical Care by the United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties. With over a decade of frontline ICU practice, Dr. Cole has managed thousands of critically ill patients with conditions including sepsis, ARDS, multi-organ failure, thromboembolic disease, and complex post-operative complications. His expertise spans invasive procedures (central venous access, mechanical ventilation, advanced hemodynamic monitoring) and systems-based practice (sepsis protocols, code blue leadership, multidisciplinary rounds). He has published original research, case reports, and abstracts in Critical Care Medicine, CHEST, and Circulation. His scholarly contributions include studies on ventilator asynchrony detection, hyponatremia, and ICU outcomes, as well as the role of family presence during ICU rounds. In addition, he is the Author of the well-received book "How to Build a Smile", a self-help book with reflections on his experience in the ICU. Dr. Cole has been recognized as a Top Doctor in Critical Care by SJ Magazine on two separate occasions and currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Rowan University, and has been core faculty for multiple residency and fellowship programs. He is a pervious instructor for the Fundamentals of Critical Care course and has led simulation, central line safety, and resident education initiatives for more than a decade. He also plays an active role in hospital quality and safety, serving on or chairing numerous committees focused on ethics, sepsis care, peer review, pharmacy and therapeutics, and multidisciplinary critical care. His leadership in improving ICU processes—including standardized rounding, line safety, and life support training—reflects his commitment to patient safety and outcomes.
