Dr. Winsmann is a Harvard Medical School-affiliated, licensed psychologist in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the State of New York, the State of Florida, and the state of Iowa. Dr. Winsmann is Board-Certified in forensic psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Psychology, and he is a Fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Psychology. For more information about ABPP Board-certification as a forensic psychologist, please visit: https://wwabfp.com/about/ Dr. Winsmann completed a fellowship in psychoanalytic psychotherapy at the Massachusetts General Hospital Center for Psychoanalytic Studies as a Harvard Medical School Clinical Fellow, where he subsequently served as a Faculty Member. Dr. Winsmann serves as the Moderator of PsyLaw List, which is an international email list comprised of approximately 1000 members involved in forensic psychology. He is also the Director of the Boston Symposium on Psychology and the Law. Dr. Winsmann maintains a private practice in which he provides forensic, consulting, and clinical services. In regard to forensic services, Dr. Winsmann has completed more than 500 forensic evaluations, having been retained by attorneys and appointed by Courts to conduct forensic evaluations. Forensic services provided by Dr. Winsmann include evaluations of both juveniles and adults. Specific referral questions able to be addressed include, nonexclusively: Competency to Stand Trial Competency to Waive Miranda Rights Competency to Plead Guilt Voluntariness of Statements Criminal Responsibility Diminished Capacity Aid in Sentencing Sexually Violent Person Commitment Personal Injury Vocation and Aptitude Mental Health Commitment Psychosexual Guardianship and Conservatorship Risk of General and Sexual Violent Evaluations Dr. Winsmann has worked on cases in numerous jurisdictions including Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Washington State, California, Florida, Minnesota, Missouri, Arizona, Illinois, Iowa, and in federal courts. Dr. Winsmann has testified as a retained and a Court-appointed expert witness in both state and federal courts. Consulting services generally refer to Dr. Winsmann working with other professionals such as attorneys to understand the psychological component of psycho-legal questions, consult on areas that may need addressing in civil or criminal matters, select juries for criminal or civil trials, and assist in finding those experts best suited to answer the psycho-legal questions and serve as experts. As a consultant with attorneys, Dr. Winsmann’s work is separated from expert work, described below, where he is only providing consultation and not serving in an evaluative role and/or testifying. In addition to credentials and experience, attorneys frequently hire Dr. Winsmann as a consultant due to his established work with the Boston Symposium on Psychology and the Law, his status as the moderator of the PsyLaw listserv as noted above, and his familiarity with numerous forensic psychologists throughout the United States. Dr. Winsmann also provides clinical services. Clinical services generally refer to the evaluation and treatment of emotional and behavioral difficulties. Dr. Winsmann has extensive experience providing psychological treatment addressing various difficulties and disorders including disorders affecting reality perception, emotional regulation, and mood. Specific diagnoses that Dr. Winsmann has treated include schizophrenic spectrum disorders, Major Depressive Disorder, General Anxiety Disorder, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, as well as various personality disorders. Finally, Dr. Winsmann treats paraphilias and paraphilic disorders along with those who have exhibited and/or have been involved in sexual and/or violent situations. He provides individual therapy to adolescents and adults. Dr. Winsmann also provides couples’ therapy.
