Dr. Andrew Sumarsono is a board-certified internal medicine physician who currently serves as Medical Director of Devoted Medical’s Transitions of Care Program, which is responsible for ensuring the safe transition home for thousands of patients discharged from the hospital each year. In addition to providing clinical care to post-discharge patients, he leverages his clinical research background to guide the program’s clinical strategy to reduce preventable hospital readmissions. Furthermore, he supports Devoted’s nurse practitioners by offering clinical oversight, medical education, and individual coaching. Prior to his role at Devoted, Dr. Sumarsono was an academic hospitalist at UT Southwestern Medical Center and Parkland Memorial Health from 2020 - 2023. During his time at UT Southwestern, he published dozens of peer-reviewed articles in top journals such as the British Medical Journal, JAMA Cardiology, Journal of General Internal Medicine, and Journal of Hospital Medicine. These projects allowed him to become an expert in randomized trials, social determinants of health, and hospital medicine. Dr. Sumarsono received his bachelor’s from the University of California – Los Angeles and obtained his medical degree from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. While working as a full-time academic hospitalist, Dr. Sumarsono also finished the Journal of Hospital Medicine Editorial Fellowship and graduated with a master’s in public health from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He has been an active member of the Society of Hospital Medicine, participating in national committees. He is licensed to practice medicine in eight states. Dr. Sumarsono utilizes his extensive knowledge and experience to serve as an expert witness involving hospital medicine and safe discharges. His research background equips him to critically analyze and interpret medical evidence with ease, while his clinical expertise gives him deep insight into real-world practices.
