Andy Berkowski, MD is a double-board certified neurologist and sleep medicine specialist who can provide his depth of knowledge to a variety of sleep-related situations in medical expert witness work. Dr. Berkowski earned an undergraduate degree in religious studies from Stanford University before attending medical school at Wayne State University in Detroit. He completed an internship at Henry Ford Hospital and residency in adult neurology at the Detroit Medical Center/Wayne State University. He returned to Stanford for fellowship training at the renown Stanford Sleep Medicine Center. Following training, he spent seven years as an academic sleep physician at the University of Michigan and Cleveland Clinic before founding ReLACS Health in 2022. ReLACS Health is a direct specialty care clinic specializing in the personalized treatment of complex sleep conditions including restless legs syndrome (RLS) and insomnia disorder through telemedicine. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Berkowski is a member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) and the International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group (IRLS SG), and he volunteers on the Scientific and Medical Advisory Board of the Restless Legs Syndrome Foundation. His most prominent work is as Vice Chair of the AASM's Clinical Practice Guidelines Task Force for the Treatment of RLS to be published in 2024. Throughout his career, Dr. Berkowski has taught medical residents and fellows in sleep medicine and has written and lectured extensively on the topic of sleep disorders, including to non-medical audiences. Beginning as a competitive public speaker in high school, he has developed the ability to explain complex medical subjects at a clear and understandable level to his audience. In addition to the breadth of knowledge of clinical sleep disorders, Dr. Berkowski has a strong understanding of sleep physiology, circadian rhythms (biological clock), and the interface of sleep and daily activities including the effects of sleep deprivation, jet lag or shift work, medications or substances, sleep-wake schedules and habits, and sleep disorders themselves. The impact of sleep-associated factors on alertness and cognition may directly influence behavior or outcomes in circumstances such as motor vehicle accidents, work-related injuries, impaired decision-making, etc., and he can provide a full understanding to his audience in a variety of legal cases.
