Dr A. E. Du Beau, PhD, MS, BS, is a neuroscientist with special expertise in forensics. Neuroscience investigates all aspects of the brain’s functionality, inclusive of neurochemical and anatomical processes that underlie behavior, perception, cognition, mentation and consciousness. Dr Du Beau’s neuroscientific expertise includes altered states of consciousness and sleep, alcohol blackout, psychoactive drugs, traumatic brain injury, memory processes, intentionality, violence and criminality. For contrast, psychologists and psychiatrists are clinicians who are principally focused on the mental state of any given patient, diagnostics and establishing a therapeutic relationship. Conversely, neuroscience uses an analytical approach to understanding how the brain works. Dr Du Beau’s doctoral research at the prestigious University of Glasgow (Scotland, United Kingdom) investigated the neurochemical properties of neural systems using an array of sophisticated laboratory, surgical, microscopy and imaging techniques. Since her post-doctoral psychophysical research at Queen’s University (Ontario, Canada), she returned back to Alaska, directing her neuroscientific expertise to forensics, which included travelling extensively for various opportunities. Dr Du Beau has served as an experienced adjunct professor of biology, human anatomy/physiology laboratory and neuropsychology with emphasis in forensics. And she has served on doctoral committees, mentoring her graduate students. Active in international forensic organizations, she is a researcher, published author and lecturer. Dr Du Beau serves on the International Association for Identification’s Science and Practice general discipline sub-committee, vetting forensic lectures and workshops. Geographic profiling is a specialty of hers, lecturing for international professional audiences. Bloodstain pattern analysis (BPA) answers questions about what happened and how at any given crime scene. BPA is a practical forensic science application relying firstly on good observational skills along with basic fluid dynamics, trigonometry and imaging techniques. Forensic behavioral evidence analysis involves practical aspects of criminology, identifying motive, intentionality, victimology and offender characteristics, plus ruling out impossible case scenarios. Like BPA, such analysis ultimately sequences case events for accurate reconstruction. Dr Du Beau can review, analyze and accurately present findings within the context of the given case.
