Ann Backof has expertise in auditing and financial reporting. Professor Backof has taught financial accounting, intermediate accounting, auditing, and data analytics during her tenure as a professor at the University of Virginia. Her research focuses on auditors’ judgments and decision making under uncertainty and jurors’ evaluation of those judgments when determining auditor negligence and damage awards. She uses psychology theory and behavioral methods to investigate these important issues. Professor Backof’s research has been published in top accounting journals including The Accounting Review, Contemporary Accounting Research, and Accounting, Organizations and Society. Her research projects have received prestigious grants from the Center for Audit Quality (CAQ), the Assurance Research Advisory Group (ARAG) and the PwC INQuires Research Grant program. Before earning her Ph.D., Professor Backof worked as an audit senior associate for PricewaterhouseCoopers in New York City where she auditing large commercial and investment banking institutions. Professor Backof holds a New York CPA certification.
