Susan K. Burke is a licensed registered nurse who has provided clinical care in various settings spanning the patient’s experience from emergency departments to homecare and self-care. She was certified in life care planning from 1996 to 2004 and provided deposition and trial testimony. After completing the required specialized training again, she was re-certified in life care planning in 2022 and most recently completed an extensive life care plan for a neurologically devastated child. Over her years in life care planning, she has worked closely with model systems of care for brain and spinal cord injuries as well as rural and international locations. She has provided life care planning services to populations of children and adults with traumatic brain injuries, birth trauma brain injuries, spinal cord and spinal injuries, electrical burns, and amputations. She is also certified as a professional in healthcare quality and has provided care coordination for individuals with disabilities receiving care in various levels of care such as inpatient, long-term acute care, inpatient rehabilitation facilities, and homecare settings. She has been licensed as a registered nurse in eleven states and currently holds a multi-state license. Ms. Burke utilizes her extensive education, specialized life care planning training and experience, and years providing clinical care as a registered nurse to promote a coordinated healthcare experience for individuals with disabilities and ensure a life care plan that will deliver optimal outcomes of health and function, maximize independence, and preserve the highest quality of life possible. As a healthcare consultant, she has analyzed a multitude of healthcare delivery system failures and facilitated interdisciplinary teams to improve patient and staff safety. In addition to her extensive nursing, life care planning, and healthcare quality and safety experience, she has collected years of foundational experience providing years of service as a member of a trust advisory committee for a special needs trust beneficiary; as a resident of Maui County, she participated in a community effort to educate the State and advocate for expanding access to healthcare services in west Maui; provided pro bono life care planning services for victims of the Columbine High School shooting; provided her time and resources as a board member for the Brain Injury Association of Colorado; supported the Kempe Children’s Foundation (an organization committed to supporting professionals in the field of child abuse, neglect, and trauma prevention) and co-chaired an event for the John Elway Foundation.
