Dr. Omar S. Darwish, MS, DO is a board-certified internist and hospitalist serving as Health Sciences Clinical Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine. He completed his internal medicine residency at St. Mary Medical Center and Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, followed by a Chief Residency in Internal Medicine at St. Mary Medical Center in Long Beach. Dr. Darwish is dually board-certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Internal Medicine (2010) and Hospital Medicine (2020), and is a founding principal of the Institute for Diagnostic Sciences, an independent organization providing research, clinical consultation, education, and medical-legal analysis in the areas of diagnostic error, clinical reasoning, and hospital systems Dr. Darwish has directed the Morbidity and Mortality Conference for the Department of Medicine at UC Irvine continuously since 2013, reviewing and presenting complex cases involving unexpected outcomes and constructing the teaching framework for residents and faculty. He directs the division's Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) Program, training physicians in bedside diagnostic ultrasound, and serves as the Hospitalist Liaison to the Surgical Burn Team, providing internal medicine consultation for high-acuity burn patients. His clinical work concentrates on hospital medicine, perioperative evaluation of high-risk surgical patients, anticoagulation management (including atrial fibrillation, venous thromboembolism, and hypercoagulable disorders such as antiphospholipid syndrome), and the prevention and management of hospital-acquired conditions. He helped develop his institution's management algorithm for Stage IV sacral decubitus ulcers and leads clinical teaching on diagnostic error, escalation of care, and patient safety. Through the Institute for Diagnostic Sciences, Dr. Darwish accepts medical-legal engagements from both plaintiff and defense counsel. The Institute's principle is straightforward: the medical record, not the retaining party, drives every opinion, and engagements are declined when the chart does not support the conclusions sought. Case experience includes diagnostic error, sepsis, in-hospital falls, unexpected death, stroke, hospital-acquired conditions including pressure ulcers, anticoagulation-related complications (bleeding and thromboembolism), perioperative complications (bleeding, infection, thrombotic events), failure to escalate, medication errors, and questions of medical necessity. Dr. Darwish has also served as a medical reviewer for Veteran Disability Claims.
