Dr. Ron Knipling has more than 40 years’ experience in traffic safety with emphasis on crash causation, driver alertness and performance, and fleet safety. He is the author of the only comprehensive textbook on large truck safety, Safety for the Long Haul; Large Truck Crash Risk, Causation, & Prevention. This 13-chapter book addresses the truck crash characteristics, risk, causation, driver fatigue, car-truck interaction, vehicle technology, roadway factors, carrier management, and enforcement. It is published by the American Trucking Associations (ATA). In recognition of the book, he received the International Road Transport Union (IRU) Order of Merit award, the first given to an American scientist. Expert witness experience includes 13 crash cases and one safety technology patent case. Legal services include reviewing case evidence, writing deposition questions, expert opinions, and testifying. All case to date have settled favorably for clients. Several cases have settled coinciding with Dr. Knipling’s testimony. In most other cases, his written opinions have let to settlements without a need for further testimony. Dr. Knipling has held senior government positions in the U.S. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. He was a Senior Transportation Fellow at the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, and has held senior consulting positions. Accomplishments include more than 300 safety-related technical reports, papers, blogs, conference presentations, and training programs. He is highly skilled as a writer and public speaker. Dr. Knipling lives near Washington, D.C., and is available for work as a safety researcher, analyst, consultant, writer, expert witness, and trainer.
