James Patrick Murphy, MD, MMM, a nationally recognized physician leader and expert in Pain Management, Addiction Medicine and controlled substances prescribing, is the nominee of the American Society of Addiction Medicine to the US Department of Health and Human Services Pain Management Best Practices Inter-Agency Task Force and he serves on the AMA's Pain Task Force. He founded Heartland Anesthesia Consultants in Elizabethtown, KY and Murphy Pain Center in Louisville where he has been President and Medical Director for the past 17 years. Dr. Murphy’s credentials are unparalleled: board certifications in Pain Medicine, Addiction Medicine, Anesthesiology and Preventive Medicine/Addiction. He has earned the distinction of Fellow, American Society of Addiction Medicine. His Pain Management fellowship was at Minnesota’s renowned Mayo Clinic, where he served on the faculty of the Mayo Medical School. He now serves as an Asst. Clinical Professor at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. He earned a Master of Medical Management from the University of Southern California's prestigious Marshall School of Business. A champion of universal access to quality healthcare, in recognition he was awarded the Mayday Fellowship in Washington, DC. He has created educational programs recognized by the Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure and the Federation of State Medical Boards and nationwide has given presentations in concert with government regulators, law enforcement, physician groups, and various community organizations. A past president of the Greater Louisville Medical Society, he has been featured in a diversity of media ranging from medical journals, magazines and newspapers to television, Internet sites and social media. A former Commander in United States Navy, Dr. Murphy served our nation as a decorated Naval Flight Surgeon aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise. He has volunteered as an anesthesiologist on numerous surgical missions with the OperationSmile.
