James Patrick Murphy, MD, MMM, DFASAM is a nationally recognized physician leader and expert in Pain Management, Addiction Medicine and controlled substances prescribing. He is the Immediate Past President of the Kentucky Society of Addiction Medicine and is the American Society of Addiction Medicine’s representative on the influential American Medical Association Substance Use & Pain Care Task Force. Dr. Murphy is also the Southeastern United States Regional Director (Region X) for the American Society of Addiction Medicine. Dr. Murphy is founder & CEO of Murphy Pain Center, located in New Albany, Indiana. Additionally, he teaches medical students, residents, and colleagues in his volunteer role as Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. Dr. Murphy is a past president of the Greater Louisville Medical Society and currently serves on the board of directors of the Greater Louisville Medical Society Foundation. He also volunteers as the Co-director and medical prescriptive authority for the Kentucky Harm Reduction Coalition. Dr. Murphy’s credentials are exceptional. With over 38 years of professional medical practice, Dr. Murphy has earned three ABMS board certifications (Anesthesiology, Pain Medicine, and Addiction Medicine). In 2021, he was awarded the distinction of Distinguished Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (DFASAM). Dr. Murphy's subspecialty Pain Medicine fellowship was at Minnesota’s renowned Mayo Clinic, where he also served on the faculty of the Mayo Medical School. He earned a Master of Medical Management degree (MMM) from the University of Southern California Marshall School of Business. In recognition of his clinical excellence and advocacy for universal access to quality healthcare, in 2006, Dr. Murphy was selected for the prestigious Mayday Pain & Society Fellowship Program, distinguishing him as one of America's leading experts in the fields of acute and chronic pain and pain management. Dr. Murphy has created educational programs recognized by the Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure and the Federation of State Medical Boards. Nationwide, he has given presentations in concert with government regulators, law enforcement, physician groups, and other community organizations. His work has been featured in a diversity of media ranging from peer-reviewed medical journals, magazines and newspapers, to television, Internet sites, social media, and both the Kentucky and the Indiana board of medical licensure websites. A former Commander in United States Navy, with over 17 years of combined reserve and active-duty service, Dr. Murphy's military career included his tour of duty as a Flight Surgeon aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise ("Operation Praying Mantis") and his volunteer return to active duty during Operation Desert Shield. He has also volunteered overseas, providing free medical care and education to impoverished and developing communities, including numerous surgical missions as an anesthesiologist with Operation Smile.
