After first becoming fascinated by emergency care as a Junior in Medical School, I have spent the past three and a half decades practicing clinical Emergency Medicine full time. I was Chief Resident in one of the first Emergency Medicine Residency Programs in the country and became one of the first physicians to become both residency trained and board certified in Emergency Medicine. During my career I have practiced in emergency departments of all sizes and performed nearly all roles associated with emergency care and administration, including emergency department director, clinical instructor, financial director, quality assurance reviewer, pre-hospital EMS director and air-evacuation physician. A common thread has been the opportunity to teach paramedic students, nursing students, physician assistant students, medical students, interns and residents in the clinical aspects of Emergency Medicine. I read the medical literature extensively but do not perform research or publish myself. This allows me the time to assimilate the vast amount of rapidly changing information available on emergency care, and to put it into play in my clinical practice and teaching. I have maintained Board Certification for over 30 years and have added bedside ultrasound, video-laryngoscopy and numerous electronic medical record competencies to those that I originally gained during my initial training. Emergency Medicine continues to add variety and fullness to my life and I plan on practicing for many years to come.
