Dr. Elizabeth A. Phelps is the Pershing Square Professor of Human Neuroscience at Harvard University and a leading authority on the cognitive neuroscience of memory, emotion, and decision-making. For more than three decades, her research has examined how emotion shapes what people remember and how they decide. She has conducted foundational work on the amygdala's role in fear and emotional memory, and landmark longitudinal studies of memory for the September 11, 2001 attacks that demonstrate how vivid emotional memories drift in accuracy over time even as confidence in them remains high.
