I am a practicing pediatric intensive care physician. I also practice pediatric sedation. I have practiced pediatric intensive care since 1989. I am professor of Pediatrics at Georgetown University School of Medicine. In the past I have held the positions of Chief Medical Officer of St. Christopher Hospital for Children, Director of the Pediatric ICU Director of Pediatric Inpatient Services and Vice Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at Medstar Georgetown University Hospital, and in these roles I have dealt with the Standard of Care for pediatricians and pediatric specialists. I am board certified in Pediatrics and in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine and am a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and College of Critical Care Medicine. I am a clinically active full-time Pediatric Hospitalist employed by Akron Children’s Hospital. In my practice, I have worked at multiple regional hospitals, both academic and community-based, in the Northeast Ohio region, including Akron, Canton, Youngstown, Boardman, Warren, and Dover. I primarily see patients in inpatient pediatric units with experience diagnosing and treating sick and injured pediatric patients with a high level of care. I am a board-certified emergency Medicine physician with over 12 years of clinical experience at a high acuity academic Level 1 trauma center as well as multiple community emergency departments in the Philadelphia region. I graduated from the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University and went on to complete an Emergency Medicine residency at Temple Hospital. I then worked as faculty at Temple Hospital with a focus on resident education, airway and procedural management, and medical simulation. I currently continue to work there in a per diem capacity while also working at several Philadelphia-area community hospitals. I have extensive experience with pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients, am published in several Emergency Medicine textbooks and journals, and routinely speak at national medical conferences.

After residency training at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem, NC, Dr. Heitz earned board certification in EM and spent 10 years working in Level 1 Trauma centers in Ohio and Virginia prior to his current position at a busy, high-acuity community emergency department in Salem, Virginia. He has spent 13 years training medical students and residents in emergency medicine as well as other specialties, specifically performing high-fidelity simulated cases to prepare physicians for the care of critically ill and injured patients. During his time in academic medicine, he gained extensive public speaking experience.
