Thanks for your interest. I am an anesthesiologist and neuroscientist educated at Harvard (A.B. Biology), UCSD/Salk Institute (MD, PhD in Neuroscience), UCSF (Anesthesiology residency), and Stanford (post-doctoral work in optogenetics, Deisseroth lab). I was board certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology in 2008, and have served on the Stanford Anesthesiology faculty ever since. My principal interests are in understanding neural mechanisms that maintain consciousness, and levels of sleep and wakefulness. I have built a research program at Stanford which investigates this problem by measuring the EEG (electroencephalogram) in patients undergoing anesthesia. I can measure their level consciousness, which informs patient safety and allows me to understand the role anesthetics play in the human brain. I have been in academic practice for over 17 years. and have been the director of the alternate site anesthesiology service at our institution for 16 years. My primary area of expertise is sedation and anesthesia for cases performed outside of the operating room (radiology suites, GI station, etc.) although I administer a significant number of anesthetics within the operating room as well. I perform a good deal of obstetric anesthesiology, and am board certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology, as well as sub-specialty certified in pediatric anesthesiology. I am fluent in English and conversational in Spanish and French, and have excellent writing skills and numerous publications.
