After six years of service in the US Army, he began his initial training in wound care at the University of South Alabama Medical Center, under the Chairman of the Department of Surgery and Burns, Dr. Arnold Luterman. In 1990, served in air-medivac operations in support of Operation Desert Shield/Storm.
