My’ background spans science (neuroscience); engineering (bioengineering, code development); technology (neural nets, machine learning, robotics); and business (founder of a software startup in the ’90s and then head of clinical operations for the human health division at Merck). I held the role of Partner at Microsoft for the past decade, leading Program Management for Information Management and Machine Learning in the Cloud + Enterprise Division. At CZ Biohub, in collaboration with partners at the University of California, Berkeley; Stanford University; the University of California, San Francisco; and the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, I built a world-class Data Science team. Now as CTO, along with CZ Biohub’s other technical Platform Leaders (Bioengineering, Computational Microscopy, Genomics, and Mass Spectrometry), I am helping to drive and support advances in bioinformatics, computational biology, image processing, and next-generation analytics. My career spans executive management of many types of companies ranging from start-up to multibillion dollar global corporations with responsibility across development, research, resource management and infrastructure. Staff sizes ranged from 200-1000 employees with budget responsibilities approaching $500MM against a revenue of $8B at peak. I have extensive skills in pharma and lifescience, corp strat, global operations, software development, startups and business development. Led pioneering efforts in software development. One notable innovation is a distributed system which allows for the remote collection of data from physicians at a time that pre-dated both distributed system environments and the widespread use of the internet as a business tool. Another, more recent (2004), example includes a framework developed to be both flexible and transparent to the dynamically changing needs of the business. This set the stage for the Information Ecosystem platform envisioned by my team and I; discussed at length elsewhere. in summary, about 40 years of experience in high technology, encompassing nearly every aspect of computation and software development, particularly with respect to data management of all types.
