QUALIFICATIONS • Provided expert testimony related to posttraumatic stress disorder, effects of trauma, psychiatric symptoms after traumatic brain injury, addiction and mood disorders. • Actively involved in federally funded research including clinical research testing new medication treatments for PTSD and brain imaging research investigating the brain basis of symptoms and individual differences in treatment response. • Licensed physician since 2000 (California License A72106). • Board certified in psychiatry (American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology). • Board certified in addiction medicine (American Board of Preventive Medicine). • Clinical Professor of Psychiatry (non-step series), University of California San Diego. CURRENT CLINICAL PRACTICE • At the Veteran Affairs San Diego Healthcare System, Dr. Matthews serves as the Medical Director of the Dual Diagnosis Recovery Program treating patients suffering from mental illnesses and co-occurring substance use disorders. • At the San Diego Jail Based Competency Treatment Program, Dr. Matthews serves as the Medical Director treating patients who are incompetent to stand trials due to a psychotic disorder or other serious mental illness.
