Additional Information

Dr. Maher is an actively practicing, double board-certified, physician with additional graduate-level training in pharmacology and clinical trial design. Since 2017, he has served as the Medical Director for the Johns Hopkins Pain Management clinics in the Washington, DC metro area. Dr. Maher obtained his Medical Doctorate from Georgetown School of Medicine. He additionally completed graduate degrees in pharmacology from Georgetown Graduate School and clinical trial design from the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health. He completed his residency in anesthesiology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and his pain management training at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard School of Medicine in Boston. Since 2016, he has been a tenure-track assistant professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, where he has served on various faculty leadership roles. He has published over three dozen peer-reviewed scientific papers, most of which he is the first or senior author in recognition of his contribution. He has been awarded several competitive grants to fund his research, published 10 book chapters, delivered numerous lectures regionally and nationally, and has been featured on CNN, Medscape, and other media outlets. He is an advisor to the FDA and a member of his institution's Pharmacy and Therapeutics (P&T) committee. He also serves on the editorial board of the journal Pain Medicine and as a reviewer for numerous other journals including Lancet, The British Medical Journal, Anesthesia and Analgesia, and Pain. On a national level, he is on the organizing committee for the American Academy of Pain Medicine and the Research Committee of the Spine Intervention Society. Finally, he is an Independent Medical Reviewer for utilization policies at the Department of Veteran’s Affairs as well as other private payors and insurance companies.
