Dr. Zakin received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Michigan in 1986. He finished a post-doctoral fellowship at the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center a year later. Dr. Zakin served as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute for many years. With a clinical specialty in Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, Dr. Zakin has taught workshops and conducted training sessions on the diagnosis and treatment of this condition. He is also a diplomat of the American Board of Forensic Medicine. Dr. Zakin's practice involves many facets of forensic matters. Dr. Zakin has provided expert testimony in over twenty cases of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and claims of non-work related psychiatric disability. Court testimony has been split almost equally between plaintiffs and defendants. He most recently provided testimony in the case of a world class violinist who suffered physical injury and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder following a bicycle–automobile collision. The plaintiff was awarded 6.1 million dollars by a Los Angeles Superior Court Jury. Dr. Zakin has published articles in the Journal of Youth and Adolescence, The Journal of Psychology, Abnormal Psychology and The International Journal of Eating Disorders. He has also lectured regarding the diagnosis and treatment of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder at Industrial Indemnity, California Compensation Insurance Company, Hartford Insurance, Maryland Casualty Company, Keenan and Associates and the Verdugo Community Mental Health Center.
